Clean Slate — For People in Recovery

“Recovery is a return to the true state of a healthy mind and body. It can take some hard work, yet in the 35 years I have been in recovery, I have learned that letting go of my attachment to struggle is vital to attaining freedom from the addictive cycle.”
– Karen Head, Director of Equinection

Recovery is a way of life born of commitment and grace. It is not always easy; gaining a new perspective outside of an addictive paradigm is essential.  Our Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) process, uncovers underlying motives and subtle behaviors that profoundly affect your life. Value lies in honesty gained with compassion; horses never offer even the slightest hint of judgement. Truth realized in this way is not weighted by condemnation or shame. At Equinection, you will be more honest with yourself. Realizing the truth about yourself frees you from the bonds and struggle of the addictive process.

A fundamental tenet of the Equinection approach is that most struggle is rooted in an addictive process. Often long-held beliefs, many dating back before active use began, influence recovery, creating confusion and struggle unnecessarily. While living with active addiction, we learn to expect to live with struggle. As a result of this, many believe that struggle makes recovery possible. As if the harder one tries to recover, the better recovery really is.

Horses as guides:

For all their strength and power, horses connect with humans simply and honestly. In the world of horses, there is no judgment, no rumination over the past or concern for the future. In Clean Slate you learn how to feel safe in your own skin, with your emotions, thoughts and knowing.

In developing a relationship with a horse you will realize, at a deeper level, that struggle is futile and exhausting. It is when one lets go of struggle that a horse begins to trust. Joy expands within you when your horse walks along side of you, motivated solely by trust and the feel of an open-hearted relationship. The experience of this ineffable joy is transformative in itself.

In the presence of a horse’s gentle and curious nature, harsh criticisms, which make recovery feel painful, melt away and your heart opens.

“When I turned over the drive to face recovery with a clenched fist and set jaw, I felt at home in my own skin. I was able to listen to my heart and to truly love life, one day at a time.”
– Karen Head

Terms & Conditions

Thank you for enrolling in an Equinection program. Because we are educators and not therapists, it is important that you are emotionally capable and willing to address personal challenges or conflicts that naturally arise as a result of deepening awareness. At Equinection, you will receive guidance, support, and compassionate teachings through Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) with horses. If you are seeking psychological or medical help, our programs are not suited to your goals.

About Fees: Equinection workshops are designed to offer individual attention; our groups are kept small in number to allow for the highest potential for growth and learning. Because of the limited group size, all fees for workshops are non-refundable.

All Equinection Programs:

  • All deposits are non-refundable. There are no exceptions.
  • To hold a place in one of our programs, we require the payment of a non-refundable deposit.
