Compassion as guide
“Show them whose boss” was the adage for training and riding horses when I was young. But we have learned that building trust is the only way to partner with a horse.
And, once, “tough love” was all the rage in promoting recovery. However, “tough” became the focus and love was confused with fear. Love transforms recovery from a struggle with shame into a joyous adventure. There comes a time to let go of overpowering and judging harshly as a way of recovery.
Solid, dependable recovery relies on the experience of giving and receiving unconditional love in relationships.
