Karen at 13 with her horse, ErnestA personal note from Karen:

This photo is one of myself at 13 years of age, with my horse Ernest.

I wonder at the cycles in life. My youth centered on my horses and the freedom of riding over the Virginia fields for hours. Ernest was the king of the barn and became my conduit to sanity during the tumultuous teenage years when the cafeteria at school was a jungle and everyone except me seemed to understand the rules. Of course now I understand that no one really knew the rules.

Marriage and children became my focus for a few years while horses whispered to me in my dreams – day and night. Now, the children are adults and I am living a life centered on horses once again. My life has come full circle carrying the love, wisdom, and hope gleaned from a full life. So, antiquated though it is, I chose to put my childhood picture of Ernest and myself on this page to give the reader an understanding of the kind of relationship we teach here at Equinection. My life has been better because of the horses who carried me through childhood, adolescence, motherhood. Now I am being carried into a wonderful field of helping and supporting people who may need a break from the chaotic demands this culture creates, in order to find themselves: true, simple, and uncluttered.

Ernest was my partner. He wasn’t coerced into bowing his head to be close to me for a photo op, he wanted that closeness as much as I wanted to feel his breath on my cheek. Horses don’t lie, and however forced will not volunteer to be close to a person that they do not trust.

Your experiences at Equinection will remind you of your strengths and help you tap into your inner wisdom. It is always a lesson of the heart, to be good to yourself and to praise every step you take towards authenticity.
